The chapter examines the role of the G20 in promoting global governance, highlighting both its achievements and its limitations. While the G20 proved effective in coordinating the international response to the 2008 financial crisis, its influence has weakened amid geopolitical tensions, declining multilateral cooperation and an increasingly fragmented global agenda. In this context, the Italian Presidency in 2021 is presented as an opportunity to revitalize the G20’s role, especially in addressing the health, economic and social consequences of the Covid-19 crisis and strengthening international cooperation on shared global challenges.

Abstract

The chapter examines the role of the G20 in promoting global governance, highlighting both its achievements and its limitations. While the G20 proved effective in coordinating the international response to the 2008 financial crisis, its influence has weakened amid geopolitical tensions, declining multilateral cooperation and an increasingly fragmented global agenda. In this context, the Italian Presidency in 2021 is presented as an opportunity to revitalize the G20’s role, especially in addressing the health, economic and social consequences of the Covid-19 crisis and strengthening international cooperation on shared global challenges.
