This essay develops an analysis of the Italian constitutional scholarship on the role of the President of the Republic in our legal system. The theories developed on this point range from that which describes him as the supreme ruler of the State in moments of crisis, to that which sees him as the holder of a power of constitutional political direction. The main question that researchers have asked themselves since the approval of the Constitution of 1948 is whether the President is a guaranteeing or governing structure, but the most recent authoritative doctrine has ruled out both theses, ending up by defining him as a constitutional gyroscope. In short, the definition of the role of the President of the Republic in the Italian legal system is a real never-ending story because of the flexibility of the constitutional norms that regulate its attributions which do not allow to embrace a univocal thesis
