This paper presents a data-driven approach allowing the insurance companies operating in the agricultural sector to assess the accumulation risk related to harmful meteorological events. The approach is based on the idea that the crucial piece of information necessary to consistently evaluate the accumulation risk is given by the knowledge of the characteristic spatial extension of the potentially harmful events. A procedure for estimating this quantity using historical weather time series is proposed.
