Le questioni relative al significato del corpo e alle sue relazioni con la mente e l'anima, costituiscono uno dei temi ricorrenti della produzione di Orwell, finendo con l'investire i diversi ambiti della sua attività. Luogo simbolico della riconciliazione tra gli aspetti materiali e spirituali dell'esistenza umana, il corpo si impone quindi come una chiave di accesso privilegiata alle riflessioni di Orwell sui rapporti di classe, sulla religione e sull'utopia, in un'indagine destinata a culminare nelle pagine di Nineteen Eighty-Four.
