Nowadays, about ten intra-oral scanning devices for restorative dentistry have been developed all over the world. Only some of those devices are currently available on the market. All the existing intraoral scanners try to face with the disadvantages of the traditional impression fabrication process. The aim of the present publication is to provide an extensive review of the existing intraoral scanners for restorative dentistry with particular attention to the working principles, features and performances. A further aim is to describe the development of a new intraoral laser-based teeth scanner for in-vivo measurement and virtual 3d dental impression generation [4].
