Amor belli: prefigurazioni di guerra e memorie lucanee nell'Achilleide di Stazio

This paper examines references in Statius’ Achilleid to Lucan’s Bellum Civile that support the transition of Statius’ poem to a martial epic. The analysis focuses on the expression amor belli (Ach. 1,412), which remembers Lucan 1,21 and suggests the relevant polysemic reading of amor in the Achilleid, and on the gigantomachic simile in Ach. 1,484-490, which recalls the memory of the Gigantomachy in Lucan (7,144-159), and confirms the possible future affirmation of a war narrative in the Statian poetic program.
