In this paper we review the main research made by Scuola di Psicoterapia Cognitiva (SPC) - Associazione di Psicologia Cognitiva (APC), aimed at a deeper explanation of the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, that is to identify the goals and representations which rule obsessive behaviours and specifically the obsessive reasoning. The results are interesting also for the comprehension of other important problems of clinical and general psychology, such as the nature of the sense of guilt, the influence of emotional and motivational states on cognitive processes, the influence of guilt emotion on reasoning and the contribution of this influence to the maintenance of the pathology, that is the explanation of the neurotic paradox, and the relations between rationality and psychopathology.
