The study proposes an analysis of the psychometric properties of the English Metacognitive Questionnaire (EMQ; Palladino et al., 2019) for primary school. This tool was originally designed to assess the metacognitive reflection ability of lower secondary school students regarding learning English as a second language. The exploratory factor analysis models conducted on a sample of more than 200 Italian primary school children revealed a structure that is substantially consistent with the original version and with the theoretical assumptions underlying the factors that make up the scale. The data are discussed in relation to teachers’ opinions on each student’s metacognitive and motivational knowledge. The results indicate the usefulness of the EMQ for assessing students’ self-reflective abilities, not only in lower secondary school but also starting from primary school. Several cases are presented to illustrate its clinical utility.
